A busy and densely packed valley in its heyday, this area once housed an iron foundry, a furniture factory, a distillery, several grist mills, and two rubber plants - all within a one half mile stretch of the canal.
Still remaining are several watered locks and wasteway structures, evidence of the Cascade Race and tunnel, two canal-era buildings, Ace Rubber/Garro Tread (one of Akron's few remaining rubber plants), and two historic railroads.
The entire Cascade Locks Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the Interior in 1992.
Spanning Locks 10 -16 of the Ohio & Erie Canal, this historic area is a must-see for trail users and history buffs alike. Here you can find evidence of much of Akron's canal and early industrial history, all within a short walk from downtown!
Cascade Locks Park is part of the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway with access to the popular towpath trail and the Ohio & Erie Canalway Byway.
The park boasts the Jewel of the Canal, the c.1850s Mustill store, house and yard. The Mustill Store houses one of the Canalway's most important Visitor Centers, and contains many fascinating exihibits on the beginning, heyday, and demise of the canal. The Mustill Store is free to the general public, handicap accessible, and perfect for all ages. Store hours vary depending on the season.
The rehabilitation of the Mustill house and store was the first step in the completion of Cascade Locks Park. Other development plans are under way, including the historic Schumacher Cascade Mills Site.
The park will highlight the dynamics of change of Akron's history through the canal and industrial era by interpreting the wealth of history remaining in the landscape.
